Darlinghurst Blog: Street Art: Will Coles Work Can

Despite the rain I was able to have a sweet adventure on Saturday with two of my most favourite people, blogger Sarah Allely and her 19-month-old daughter, Billie. I took Billie to the Caldwell Street Garden with the promise that fairies lived there and on the way home we came across a different kind of magic outside the Stables Theatre: a little piece of street art by Will Coles.

Great picture with Billie!

Forgot to mention, I have a cast concrete armchair upstairs at The Stables Theatre as part of a set for current production of 'Silent Disco' (which is fortunately rather excellent.) My largest concrete sculpture yet, even though it's hollow it was an absolute %$*@ to get upstairs! :)

There is a nice piece of art at the corner of George and Market Street Sydney, just outside the Commonwealth Bank and situated on the base of a monorail column, it's an intriguing relief scuklpture of revolvers nose to nose. Not sure if it's by the same artist as mentioned (Will Coles), however its style at least to my uneducated eye seems to me to be his. Regardless it's a curious and well hidden piece.

Billie is very cute - and I love her little bag! I think the random nature of Will's street art is brilliant and can I suggest that 10 Buck Alley would be a great location for his next piece?

By the way, TAFECOMMUNICATION, you have some interesting insights but you should really change your name! :)

Hi ruby, I'm so glad you noticed sweet billie's bag. I bought it for her from a store in Potts point, with a matching dress and hat, when she was born. She has apparently lost the hat but still clings to the bag. I'm sure Mr Coles could arrange a ten buck alley piece - Mr Coles?

Where the *#@^ is 10 Buck Alley?! I can't find it on Google Maps. If it's in Sydney then yes, probably!

& the doubled-revolver is mine, there should be loads of others under the Monorail too, their supports make nice plinths. :)

Haha, Will. Ten Buck Alley's real name is the rather less exciting, Barnett Lane. it's just near the corner of Bourke and William streets.

And note the wee mandarin Billie clutches, which she picked from the fairy garden.
Actually, Billie still has possession of the hat - she has just outgrown it. She did however lose a beautiful hat handmade by Ms Tingle.

Hi Ruby, thanks for your kind words, however, my ridiculous 'handle' that's ye olde cool CB Radio for 'Name' is part of my Raymond Chandlerish Noirish lifestyle, where by day I am Mr. Square Teacher and by night Mr. Couch Potato thinking about being creative but not doing much about it!

Guess what, TC? I was in the CBD on Wednesday and happened to be at the intersection of George and Market streets when I realised I was standing right outside That Bank. Sure enough, I looked at the base of the Monorail column and saw Will's little double pistol! I've walked past there so many times but never even noticed it. I love hidden gems like that.
Will, if you're in the hood then head to 10 Buck Alley Cafe, which is on the corner of Bourke Street and Barnett Lane - aka 10 Buck Alley. They do a mean coffee and it might inspire you for your next random act of street art...

I'll see what I can do... ;)

There are now a few small squashed jars around that cafe's street as well as a couple of sinking ships, hope they lasted the night!

Excellent, Will. I will definitely be heading down there today to check them out! VT

Ruby, Yes it a nice surprise when you come across little hidden jems like this. I don't look for anything on purpose but in a way I'm always looking for something and that's what makes the discovery interesting and exciting. There's was a nice piece of a white dog on the exterior wall (looking South) of a semi at the intersection of Crown Street and Clifton Reserve (Laneway). Though someone tagged it!

Check out the My Darling Darlinghurst Facebook page for a photograph of Will's magical sinking ship filled with gold coins, which I found outside Ten Buck Alley. I only found one ship and one little bottle, so the others must have been taken or were very well hidden.
