There was disappointing news this morning that the rainbow crossing at Taylor Square was ripped out last night by the NSW Government.
The bright, vivid colours - and what they represented - were such a welcome addition to Oxford Street and really brought the road to life, making it a destination for residents and tourists.
The crossing was put in place by the City of Sydney to mark the 35th anniversary of Mardi Gras in March.
But the state government refused to let it remain due to safety concerns and removed it at 10pm last night.
It's so sad that it's now gone and is just a memory.
RIP rainbow crossing.

I was so sorry to hear this news this morning on the ABC. Thanks for the links to the stories. It reminded me of many years ago when I was living in Newtown and a group of guerilla artists took over Macdonaldtown Station one morning and painted the whole station pink, including the railway furniture. I was on the train going from Newtown to the city and everyone started laughing and talking. The artists said they did it as the station was so grey and depressing. Sure enough the painting squad arrived soon after and covered up the pink station - painting everything back to grey again! RIP rainbow crossing - back to grey bitumen.
I remember that pink station - I also caught train from Newtown to the city... it was 1985 or 1986. Brilliant and hilarious.
